In short: gutter guards in Jacksonville cost about $9–$18 per foot installed for stainless micro-mesh and $3–$7 for screen or perforated guards. Under oaks and pines they turn three or four cleanings a year into an occasional brush-off. On a house with no trees nearby, they are rarely worth the money.

What we are actually keeping out

Every guard is a trade-off between what it blocks and how much water it lets through. Around Jacksonville the debris is a specific mix: small, waxy live oak leaves in spring, long pine needles in fall, oak catkins and a thick coat of pollen in March, and Spanish moss and twigs after every windy day. Pine needles are the hard one. They slide through wide screens and lie across the openings of cheaper guards like a mat.

Guard types, plainly

Stainless micro-mesh

A fine stainless mesh over an aluminum frame. It stops needles, seeds and most pollen while letting heavy rain through. It costs the most and it is what we recommend under pines.

Screen and perforated aluminum

Larger openings, lower price. Good at stopping oak leaves, less good with needles. A sensible choice where the main problem is a single oak.

Foam and brush inserts

Cheap and easy to buy, and in our climate they hold debris and grow things. We do not install them, and we remove them more often than we would like.

Guard prices are estimates for guards installed on sound gutters. If the gutters underneath need re-hanging first, that is quoted separately.

Fitting guards to the gutters you have

Guards work only on gutters that are hung straight and pitched right. Before fitting them we clean the system, check the hangers and the fall to each outlet, and fix what is off. If the gutters themselves are near the end of their life, putting new guards on top is money poorly spent, and we will say so.

What guards will not do

No guard makes a gutter maintenance-free here. Pollen and fine grit build up on top of mesh and need brushing off, usually once a year. Guards also do not fix undersized gutters; in the hardest summer downpours a little water can sheet over any guard on a steep roof. Set expectations right and they are one of the better upgrades for a tree-covered lot.

Gutter guards: questions

Do gutter guards work on pine needles?

Fine micro-mesh does. Wide screens and perforated covers let needles in or let them mat across the top.

Can guards go on my existing gutters?

Usually, if the gutters are sound and pitched correctly. We check and fix the gutters first.

Do guards void my roof warranty?

Guards that clip to the gutter and do not slide under the shingles avoid that issue. We fit that kind unless you ask otherwise.
